#MySummerFling2014: Mati in Less Than 24 Hours

Unlike some of my out-of-town trips which were planned weeks or months in advance, my recent Mati trip with high school friends was the most spontaneous, born out of boredom and the desperate need to prove that we're cool. :))))

Last year, we experienced the bliss of fireworks display and lost some pairs of slippers at #SarbayFest2013, but our version of summer fling this time involved no colorful midnight skies nor ramblings over stolen things. Instead, we flirted with Davao Oriental's very own Mati City and experienced more than what we were hoping for.

Dahican

Some time near midnight, we reached Dahican and the first sight that greeted us at the beach was that of baby turtles' hatching!
Newly-hatched pawikans in Dahican!
We then settled ourselves near a resort that gave us enough light to see things around us, relaxed and hushed at the feel of the moon above us and the sound of big waves violently kissing the shore. Dahican is known for its huge waves that make it ideal for skimboarding. I've been to the place twice before, but never for an overnight. As the self-proclaimed spontaneously boring people that we are, we spent the night talking and talking, with much less drinking. Pls tell us we're so fun to be with. :))))

The day that followed had been too looooooooooong, believe me.

We watched the sunrise first thing when we awoke, took photos, dipped & danced with the waves under the terrible heat, burned our skins (somehow), but above all, enjoyed the childishness in us! This is Dahican, beybeh!

Dahican and a bunch of crazy friends can bring out the inner child in anyone!

Mayong Resort

We decided to go somewhere else, somewhere cold and relaxing after the makasunog-panit, makauga-tutunlan Dahican atmosphere, so we headed to Mayong Resort, where the fresh water of its lagoon awaited us. It's a beach resort with cottages and everything, and though the sea is not as tempting as Dahican's, I think people flock there still to enjoy the cold lagoon. Anybody who had been recently battered by a fierce April sun would truly enjoy the place. Boy, how we wish we could stay here forever!

Really, we are already 20-somethings who are feeling 10-year olds. :))))

Subangan

Last stop for the Mati escapade was Subangan, a freshly opened museum in the city that houses treasured relics, documents, photos, sugar, spice and everything nice about Davao Oriental. Upon entering, the skeletal installation of Davor, the sperm whale that died in the shores of Governor Generoso, would greet you, instantly inviting you to take a photo or two with it as the background.

Subangan's exterior, plus the remains of Davor the whale.

The two-storey museum is 1,000 square meter in size but it capsulizes all that is about and there is in  Davao Oriental. One tour around the place already feels you've been around the region. A few pictures here and there, and the next thing you know, you're planning for your next Davao Oriental trip!

Reunited with a loved one at last, Ailyn?

heelllllpppp! kernyyy
Our spontaneous (yes, emphasis on spontaneous) Mati trip was more than enough for a summer fling.  We laughed, starved, played like kids, burned our skins, etc. We arrived at Mati on a Friday night and left on Saturday afternoon. These pictures will serve as constant reminder that so much fun can be realized, even in less than 24 hours.
