Hi there readers! Today, I'm going to blog about the theme songs of my life. Sometimes I imagine my life being made into a movie, and what if it really would be in the future? (Those moments when daydreaming is the best mental activity on earth. Relate much, anyone?) So I decided to pick 3 songs that convey not my life's tragedies and melodramatic kacornyhans, but those that communicate best my personality and outlook in life. CHAAAARMANDERRRRR!!
But the term “theme song” is so gay, I'd rather use “Official Sound Track(s)” instead.
A brief intro: The following songs have rocked my world long before any earthquake shook any parts of the world lately. Anybody who feels the same way towards any of the songs below becomes my instant soul mate.
Here are the top 3 Official Sound Tracks of the movie that is my life (even if you don't have the slightest care):
1. UNWRITTEN by Natasha Bedingfield
Natasha Bedingfield's Grammy Award nominated song, which also became Pantene commercial's theme song and probably by every woman desperate of a long, shiny hair, is an epitome of liberation and empowerment. This is also probably what every person would listen to in their playlist especially during rainy season.
Fave lines:
Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten
Why I like it:
See? Feel the rain on your skin, no one else can feel it for you. I like this song so much that when I'm walking in the street while it's raining hard, there's that shameless part of me that wants to throw my umbrella away and sing the chorus gleefully, truly feeling the raindrops on my skin, and suddenly I'm the star of the music video I'm making in my head.
It's absurd and weird but that's exactly the feeling Unwritten gives me. It tells you to welcome uncertainty as part of life and nobody can live your life for you.
To quote Paulo Coelho, “In order to enjoy the rainbow, we must first enjoy the rain.” So screw colds and flu. Take lots of ascorbic acid tablets and let's bathe in the rain! Horayt!
2. BITCH by Meredith Brooks
This 1997 Grammy Award nominated punk song is the theme song of all socially schizophrenic women out there (me included). The title is so strong. Bitch. Because we all are, we all have been and we all will be.
Fave line:
I'm a little bit of everything All rolled into one I'm a bitch, I'm a lover I'm a child, I'm a mother I'm a sinner, I'm a saint I do not feel ashamed I'm your hell, I'm your dream I'm nothing in between You know you wouldn't want it any other way
Why I like it:
Aside from its punk rock, street tune and Meredith Brook's voice, the song reminds me that every woman has the right to be themselves and we shouldn't mind what others think of us. I'm a bitch, i'm a lover, im a sinner im a saint, I do not feel ashamed. In a world littered with people who seek of constant approval, rare are those women who live life to the fullest, enjoy every tear and learn from every mistake.
This song reminds me of all the underdogs who dream big, of prostitutes who dream of love, of single mothers who made countless mistakes in parenting, of conservatives who want to get drunk and wild, of lesbians who wish that same sex marriage be made legal in the country. It's like living life however you want it while wearing a huge “I DON'T CARE SIGN” wherever you go.
3. HERE'S TO NEVER GROWING UP by Avril Lavigne
The first time I heard Avril's latest single on youtube, I was instantly taken back to my high school years when going home late was risky yet cool, and flirting was a heinous crime. It perfectly articulates the suppressed child-likeness in every working professional who are forced to grow up fast. “You're 22, you must learn to act your age”. Whatever. Age is just a number, young is an attitude. Bleh!
Fave line:
Singing Radiohead at the top of our lungs With the boom box blaring as we're falling in love I got a bottle of whatever, but it’s getting us drunk Singing here's to never growing up
Why I like it:
To everyone who refuses to grow up and insists to stay locked in high school, here's a toast to our stubborn ways! I don't know if this song was written to reminisce high school dramas and scandals, but this sure was effective in evoking nostalgia in a stage in our life we know we can never go back to.
Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional, they say. This song doesn't encourage us to get wasted and do “shabu paaa!!!” moments while we're young; it's just a reminder that once in a while, we have to let loose, dance the most ridiculous of dance steps and belt the most off-key of tunes our larynx can produce – and these we do unabashedly with our friends – because YOLO (you only live once).
Because we are only young once and we must not be afraid to look and act stupid.
Because when our hairs are gray, skins wrinkled and voice cracked, we can't sing at the top of our lungs anymore and the only dance step we can do is the side-step, side-step move. Hence, be Crazy, if being crazy is the only way to be alive!
As you noticed, my fave songs are sung by women (feminist here!) and they are not love songs that neither speak of a budding romance nor a failed fairy tale. The songs are all about life and being yourself.
If my life would be made a movie, I still can't decide which song will be the Official sound track, you know the one that will be played during the closing credits. All the songs are lovely and empowering, they reflect and radiate the most inner parts of my being.
In the movie where I am the protagonist, I'd like my character to be like this: the bitch in an unwritten book who refuses to grow up!
